She is an amazing woman\, a committed Democrat\, and a stellar Secretary of State! Here’s a little of what this impressive lady has accomplished: \n\n\n\n__________ \n\n\n\nIn 1996\, Elaine Marshall became the first woman elected to a statewide executive branch office in North Carolina. She immediately established herself as a competent administrator with an eye toward reform. She has received national recognitions for modernizing the Secretary of State’s office by introducing up to date technology and reducing red tape. \n\n\n\nSince taking office\, Elaine has cut the costs of doing business in North Carolina—helping small businesses create jobs and enabling free enterprise and capital formation. She has led the effort to reform North Carolina’s lobbying laws. Elaine remains committed to making public information transparent and accessible to businesses\, investors and individuals. Her efforts have helped make North Carolina one of the most affordable places in the United States to do business. \n\n\n\nThe Secretary of State’s office today is a key law enforcement agency protecting consumers\, investors\, and charitable givers against fraud and scams. Elaine’s commitment to protecting investors has led to long prison terms for criminals and has refunded over $1 billion from major Wall Street firms for misrepresentation to North Carolina investors. She also has received international recognition for her efforts protecting trademark holders\, eliminating harmful and dangerous counterfeit goods and prosecuting counterfeiters. \n\n\n\nIn 2015\, she served as President of the National Secretaries of State and received the Lillian’s List Courage Award. A longtime member of 4-H\, in 2014 she was one of fourteen from across the country who was inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\nIn 1993-1994\, Elaine served in the North Carolina Senate\, where she was named Rookie of the Year and listed among Legislators to Watch by the News & Observer. In the Senate\, she provided a powerful voice for improving healthcare in North Carolina. Elaine successfully shepherded North Carolina’s Marital Rape Bill through the State Senate. \n\n\n\nElaine earned her law degree from Campbell University in 1981 and distinguished herself as a tough advocate for her clients in the courtroom. She began her law career defending victims of domestic violence when few lawyers would do so\, co-founded a Rape Crisis Center in rural Harnett County\, joined a grassroots lobbying effort to require insurance companies to cover mammograms and pap smears.  \n\n\n\nElaine was previously a teacher and small business owner. \n\n\n\n__________ \n\n\n\n>>> Please get your tickets today. Come relax\, enjoy the Christmas tunes\, and celebrate with us. You’ve been working hard\, and you deserve a little break. \n\n\n\nThis is an alcohol-free\, kid-friendly\, potluck function\, and it will be held at the Holly Oak Park Activity Center (to the left of the gymnasium). Softdrinks\, water\, ice\, paperware\, and plastic utensils will be provided. We’ll add more details here as they become available.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will need to register to attend this event. Tickets are free\, however. Watch your email for the registration link. All registered Democrats and other like-minded Cleveland County friends are welcome to attend. \n\n\n\nOur special guest speaker\, David Parker\, will share his insights regarding the direction of NCDP and the candidates who are running for the slate of NCDP offices. He’ll take a few questions from the audience as well. As you may know\, our SEC members will soon cast votes on behalf of the Cleveland County Democratic Party to elect the next slate of NCDP officers. \n\n\n\nLet us tell you just a little about David so you’ll understand why it’s worth your time to hear what he has to say. He is a lawyer\, a former chair of NCDP\, a county Democratic Party chair\, a musician\, and more. He has run for office himself and has served as campaign manager for Terry Sanford. He’s also what we call a double Tar Heel\, having received his BA in Economics from UNC-Chapel Hill and his JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law. \n\n\n\nYou may want to have pen and paper handy because you will assuredly learn things when David speaks. We are excited to welcome him back to Cleveland County. \n\n\n\nDuring the remainder of the meeting\, with your input\, we will schedule and plan for our upcoming annual organizational precinct meetings.
