SUMMARY:AN INVITATION FROM DWCC BOOK CLUB CHAIR\, RENÉE BUMBAUGH
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be trying something a bit different: you may read one or both of the next two books. We will begin discussions of both and just progress from there\, continuing the next month most likely to complete our discussions. This way\, you may read the one that most appeals to you (or is shorter\, if you’re pressed for time) and gain insight on a second book as well. We’ll try this and see how we like it! \n\n\n\nDemon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver \n\n\n\nA 2023 Pulitzer Prize winning novel set in present day Appalachia focused on some of today’s issues- job loss\, drug addiction\, foster parenting. The author was born and raised in Kentucky\, moved to Arizona and after an illustrious career writing both fiction and essays\, returned to live in Appalachia and tell a fictionalized version of her region’s story. A timely follow-up to Rev. Barber’s “White Poverty.”  (400+pages) (Read a review or two to become truly intrigued…) \n\n\n\nOur Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis  President by Jimmy Carter \n\n\n\nReading it now it seems as though President Carter had a crystal ball in front of him at times\, as the book was published in 2005. He writes on topics from terrorism to homosexuality\, as well as the rise in religious fundamentalism\, fundamentalism in government and women’s rights. Captivating\, not academic and not necessarily where you might think he would “land” on some topics. This one is a quick but thought-provoking read. (200 pages) \n\n\n\nWe hope you can join us on the 16th! \n\n\n\nRenée

SUMMARY:Community Fridge - Food for Our Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:The Community Fridge\, sponsored by Shelby Presbyterian Church\, is a simple but powerful way for Cleveland County residents to share food and extend hospitality to one another. Located diagonally across from the Rainbow playground\, the fridge is open 24 hours a day\, seven days a week. Anyone in need can stop by and take what helps\, and anyone able to give can drop off fresh or shelf-stable items. \n\n\n\nThe Democratic Party of Cleveland County is partnering with Washington Outreach Ministry to serve as community fridge stewards. Together\, we ensure the refrigerator remains safe\, stocked\, and welcoming. This stewardship includes coordinating volunteers\, providing space for donations\, and keeping the program running smoothly so it remains a reliable resource for neighbors who depend on it. \n\n\n\nThis month’s Community Fridge event will take place on September 20 at Shelby Presbyterian Church in downtown Shelby. Volunteers will gather to organize\, clean\, and restock the refrigerator. Donations of fruits\, vegetables\, pantry goods\, bagged sandwiches\, and clearly labeled prepared meals are especially needed. Every item placed in the fridge helps ensure that a neighbor has one less worry at the dinner table. \n\n\n\nDonations can also be dropped off at the Cleveland County Democratic Party headquarters on Tuesdays from noon–6 PM and on Saturdays from 8 AM–2 PM. Refrigerated items may be placed directly in our refrigerator\, while pantry items will be stored and stocked by volunteers as needed. Every contribution\, large or small\, goes directly toward keeping the Community Fridge available for neighbors who rely on it. \n\n\n\nThe Community Frig operates on trust and generosity. There are no forms to fill out\, no identification required\, and no questions asked. The goal is to reduce food insecurity in Cleveland County by offering a resource that is accessible\, reliable\, and free of barriers. For many families\, it makes the difference between skipping meals and having enough to get through the week. \n\n\n\nThe idea began with a Shelby High School student who wanted to create a space where people could share directly with their neighbors. Since then\, the project has grown through community support and volunteer efforts. It continues today because people believe in helping one another with dignity and respect. \n\n\n\nKeeping the fridge clean\, stocked\, and safe takes many hands. Volunteers help wipe down surfaces\, rotate items so that older food is used first\, and ensure donated meals are clearly labeled. The Community Fridge is more than a refrigerator—it is a sign that Cleveland County can come together to meet a basic need with compassion. Every bag of apples\, every box of cereal\, and every jar of peanut butter placed on its shelves is a reminder that no one should feel forgotten.

SUMMARY:Voter Registration Repair Canvass
DESCRIPTION:It’s Black & White! \n\n\n\nThousands of North Carolinians will be required to vote a provisional ballot the next time they attempt to vote if we don’t help them fix their voter registrations. Many affected voters are right here in Cleveland County. \n\n\n\nTeams of dedicated volunteers from across the state have been calling and calling and calling to alert these flagged voters. Most of those voters had no idea what was happening to their ability to vote until they received that call. \n\n\n\nBut now\, we’re down to a list of voters that we had no luck reaching by phone. And we need you to help us knock on the doors of those particular Democrats and left-leaning unaffiliateds here in Cleveland County. Will you help us? \n\n\n\nWe will provide training for all participants before we begin our canvass. You will not go out alone. There will be at least two people per canvass team. \n\n\n\nBe sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. You could be walking on many types of surfaces—some rough\, uneven\, and unlevel. Sandles and flip flops are not recommended. \n\n\n\nPlease sign up below if you’re ready to help us protect voting rights.
