AN INVITATION FROM DWCC BOOK CLUB CHAIR, RENÉE BUMBAUGH

September 16, 2025 @ 7:00 pm

We’ll be trying something a bit different: you may read one or both of the next two books. We will begin discussions of both and just progress from there, continuing the next month most likely to complete our discussions. This way, you may read the one that most appeals to you (or is shorter, if you’re pressed for time) and gain insight on a second book as well. We’ll try this and see how we like it!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

A 2023 Pulitzer Prize winning novel set in present day Appalachia focused on some of today’s issues- job loss, drug addiction, foster parenting. The author was born and raised in Kentucky, moved to Arizona and after an illustrious career writing both fiction and essays, returned to live in Appalachia and tell a fictionalized version of her region’s story. A timely follow-up to Rev. Barber’s “White Poverty.”  (400+pages) (Read a review or two to become truly intrigued…)

Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis  President by Jimmy Carter

Reading it now it seems as though President Carter had a crystal ball in front of him at times, as the book was published in 2005. He writes on topics from terrorism to homosexuality, as well as the rise in religious fundamentalism, fundamentalism in government and women’s rights. Captivating, not academic and not necessarily where you might think he would “land” on some topics. This one is a quick but thought-provoking read. (200 pages)

We hope you can join us on the 16th!
